NOTES

  • Get a partner. One plays the role of the ‘attacker,’ the other plays the ‘defender.’
  • Both must Focus on the practice to ensure safety. Do not hit each other!
  • Apply the following steps (in order) at the beginning of each self-defense application:
  1. Both players stand at attention and bow at start and at finish.
  2. Both players switch to ready stance. Come back to ready stance after each application.
  3. Attacker steps back into the required stance and yells Ki-hap! to say Ready!!!
  4. Defender remains at ready stance and yells Ki-hap! only when ready.

Belts: Orange & Up

R = right L = left

Practice each and every application many times for full understanding. Try using the other arm.

1. Step forward (R), take a forward stance; execute high punch (R) to face Step back (R) , take a forward stance; use a high block (L); execute a quick palm-heel strike (R) to face; follow up with a quick knee strike (R) to groin Target: Nose or Chin & groin
2. Step forward (R), take a forward stance; execute high punch (R) to face Step back (R), take a forward stance; use a high block (L); execute a quick punch (R) to partner’s right side; execute a quick side-thrust kick (R) to knee Target: Floating rib & knee
3. Step forward (R), take a forward stance; execute high punch (R) to face Step back (R), take a forward stance; use a high block (L); grab partner’s wrist and pull; step quickly 45° to your right (R), take a riding stance; execute a knife-hand strike (R) quickly to the left side of partner’s neck.

Holding onto wrist throughout, press your palm (R) against partner’s jaw (L-side), turn your body slightly to left, lift foot (R) off the floor and place it behind partner’s front (R) leg, trip * (L to R), pull* (in and up) and push on jaw * (away, to L and down)

With partner now on the floor and still holding onto wrist, take a forward stance (wide) execute a downward punch** to ribs (near side)

Target: Side of neck

(just behind ear) and ribs

*To be effective execute all actions (and yell) together and in one quick motion.

**To reach target you must bend back (R) foot

4. Step forward (R), take a forward stance; execute a high punch (R) to face Step back (R), take a forward stance; use a high block (L); grab partner’s wrist and pull; step quickly 45° to your right (R), take a riding stance; execute a knife-hand strike (R) quickly to neck (L -side).

Pulling on wrist, execute a reverse knife-hand strike to neck (R -side) and hold for a moment; sweep (R to L) partner’s front (R) leg with your (R) foot, push forward (away from you) and let go of arm.

Target: Both sides of neck and Groin

5. Step forward (R), take a forward stance; execute a middle punch (R) to chest Step back (R), take a forward stance; use a palm middle block (L); slide with both feet quickly 45° to your left (partner’s R side), take a riding stance, execute two quick middle punch (L&R) to partner’s lower back (kidney) and a palm-heel strike (R) to the back of ear;

To get partner’s down bring up your leg (R), execute a downward side-thrust kick to the back of partner’s front knee (R), then execute a front push kick (R) to back

Target: Kidney, back of ears and knee.

6. Step forward (R), take a forward stance; execute a middle punch (R) to chest Step back (R), take a forward stance; use a knife-hand middle block (L); grab partner’s wrist and pull; step quickly 45° to your right ® and turn to face partner directly, take a riding stance and execute a middle punch (R) to solar plexus.

Holding onto wrist, twist your own wrist (L) anti-clockwise and jerk partner’s arm downward and into your side (L), pivot to left, take a forward stance, and execute a round elbow strike (R) to head.

Target: Solar Plexus and side of head (where jaw meets neck)
7. Step forward (R), take a forward stance; execute a middle punch (R) to chest Step back (L), take a kicking stance; block the intended blow with an inner-foot middle block (L – from left to right); execute a spin-hook kick (R – quickly) to the side of the head Use bottom of foot (behind toes) to finish spin-hook.

Blue Belts & Up use jump-spin-hook kick

Target: Side of head.

8. Step forward (R), take a forward stance; execute middle punch (R) to chest Step back (R), take a kicking stance; block the intended blow with an inner-foot middle block (R – from right to left); execute a spin-back kick (L – quickly) to solar plexus Use heel, not toes.

Blue Belts & Up use spin-back kick

Target: Groin, Solar Plexus or Chin

9. Step forward (R), take a forward stance; execute middle punch (R) to chest Step back (R), take a kicking stance; block the intended blow with an inner-foot middle block (R – from right to left); without dropping your foot, turn 90º to L and execute a low side-thrust kick to opponent’s (R) knee and a high side-thrust kick (quickly) to neck Target: Adam’s Apple
10. Step forward (R), take a forward stance; execute middle punch (R) to chest Step back (R), take a kicking stance; with precise timing execute a front-thrust kick (R) to solar plexus before attacker’s arm is fully extended Adv.- No step/Jump

Target: Solar Plexus

11. Step forward (R), take a forward stance; execute high punch (R) to the face Step back (R), take a kicking stance; with precise timing execute a high-round kick (R) to side of head before attacker’s arm is fully extended Adv.- No step/Jump

Target: Side of head.

12. Step forward (R), take a forward stance; execute a high punch (R) to the face Step back (R), take a back stance; execute an outer-knife-hand high block (left-hand); grab opponent’s wrist, pull downward & to your left side (twisting outward as you pull); execute a front-snap kick (quickly) to solar plexus Target: Solar Plexus
13. Step forward (R), take a forward stance; execute a high punch (R) to the face Step back (right foot), take a back stance; execute an outer-knife-hand high block (left-hand); grab opponent’s wrist, pull downward & to your left side (twisting outward as you pull); execute a high-roundhouse kick (quickly) to the face Target: Temple
14. Step forward (R), take a forward stance; execute a high punch (R) to the face Step back (left foot), take a back stance; execute an outer-arm middle block (right arm); step forward, take a twist stance; execute a downward elbow strike (right arm) to the base of neck Target: Collar Bone
15. Step forward (R), take a forward stance; execute a middle punch (R) to the chest Step back (L), take a back stance; execute an outer-arm middle block (R); lunge forward (R) into forward stance; execute a back-fist strike (R) to the side of the head and quickly execute a forearm reverse punch to middle section. Target: Temple & Ribs
16. Step forward (R), take a forward stance; execute a middle punch (R) to the chest Step back (L), take a back stance; execute an outer-arm middle block (R); move back foot left to right (turn through back) & slide your right foot to the outside (R) of opponent’s front (R) leg, take a riding stance; execute two (2) backward elbow strikes (one to left; one to right) to opponent’s side (turn your head in both directions)

To get opponent down, reach down with both hand (between legs, bend knees), grab opponent’s front (R) leg & pull it up while pushing down (sit) on the thigh with your bum; to finish, holding on to the leg, take a crane stance & execute a downward side-thrust kick to the groin

Target: Floating Ribs & Groin
17. Step forward (R), take a forward stance; execute a high punch (R) to the face Step back (L), take a back stance; execute an outer-knife-hand high block (R); slide (both feet) forward, take a walking stance; execute a reverse knife-hand strike to the side of neck

To get opponent down, grab collar (back of neck), move front foot (R) slightly forward & plant it directly behind opponent’s right leg & into riding stance; at the same time pull opponent (to left) over your front leg (right) & slam them on the floor

Target: Behind the Ear
18. Step forward (R), take a forward stance; execute a high punch (R) to the face Step back (L), take a back stance; execute an outer-knife-hand high block (R)

To get opponent down, grab wrist, pull to your right side, lift up back foot (left), take a crane stance, push bottom of foot (L) into the back of opponent’s (R) knee, & execute a reverse knife-hand strike (left hand) to the neck (both actions together)

Target: Back of Knee & Adam’s Apple
19. Step forward (R), take a forward stance; execute a middle punch (R) to chest Step back (R), take a back stance; execute an outer-knife-hand guarding middle block (L); grab opponent’s wrist, pull downward & to your left side (twisting outward as you pull); move your front foot (L) forward, take a forward stance (wide); execute a front-uppercut elbow strike (right) to the chin Target: Chin
20. Step forward (R), take a forward stance; execute a high punch (R) to the face Step back (R), take a back stance; execute an outer-knife-hand guarding middle block (L)

To get opponent down, grab wrist, pull downward & to your side (L), twisting outward as you pull; move your front foot (L) forward & to left, take a forward stance (wide);bend upper body forward, place your hand (R) behind opponent’s front (R) leg (from outside/L) & clear leg off the ground
